DARK GUMS

Pigmentation of gingiva not just has an impact on esthetics but also creates psychological negativity. This impact is aggravated in patients with “gummy smile” or excessive gingival display while smiling (high smile line). Although a wide array of advanced depigmentation techniques are available to manage this condition, there is still a scarcity of information to the general public about the ways to identify the condition and possible techniques available to treat this.

What causes black gums?

The gums are tough tissues that surround and hold the teeth in place. They can range in color from red or pink to brown or black. Gingival hyperpigmentation can be defined as a darker gingival color beyond what is normally expected or seen around.  Hyperpigmentation is contributed by-products of the physiological process such as melanin, melanoid, carotene, oxyhemoglobin, reduced hemoglobin, bilirubin and iron and/or pathological diseases, and conditions. Melanin pigmentation results from melanin granules which are produced by our pigment producing cells known as melanoblasts. Furthermore, environmental risk factors such as tobacco smoking contribute to the gingival hyperpigmentation in both active and passive form. Ethnicity and age also influence the color of gingiva and has no sexual predilection. In some cases, black gums may mean a person has an underlying condition.
